In 2002, Palmetto Bay-Miami incorporated, officially combining the neighboring communities of Cutler and East Perrine.

One of the village's most appealing features is the quality of its public education. Students living in the area usually attend the top rated schools of Coral Reef Elementary, Howard Drive Elementary, and Perrine Elementary, Southwood Middle School and Palmetto Middle School, and Miami Palmetto High School. Palmetto's campuses are managed by the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district, one of the largest public school districts in the country. Countywide, the district serves about 350,000 students and manages more than 330 campuses.
